Wagons Are the Only Vehicle Class That Doesn’t Trade Your Life for Someone Else’s

I ran the aggression ratio on every vehicle class in the new IIHS driver death rate study published last week, and one body style broke the math. Midsize wagons scored 1.00 — twenty-seven driver deaths and twenty-seven other-driver deaths per million registered vehicle years.[1] For every one of its own occupants that a midsize wagon kills, it kills exactly one person in the other car. Perfect symmetry. Nobody else comes close.

Compare that to the rest of the fleet. Very large pickups carry an aggression ratio of 4.58, meaning they kill nearly five other drivers for every one of their own that dies behind the wheel. Large SUVs sit at 2.58, and even midsize SUVs, the default family vehicle in suburban America, run a 1.92 ratio. On the opposite end, minicars register 0.35: they sacrifice their own drivers at rates that would be alarming for a vehicle category that hasn't been manufactured in meaningful volume since 2024.[1]

Every vehicle class on the American road makes a deal. SUVs and pickups protect their occupants by offloading kinetic energy into whatever they hit. Small cars absorb that energy with their occupants' ribcages. Large cars like the Dodge Charger HEMI, which recorded a driver death rate of 127 and an other-driver death rate of 161, just kill indiscriminately.[1] The wagon is the only class where the deal is fair.

This isn't an accident of small sample sizes. IIHS President David Harkey noted in the same study that "differences in driver behavior most likely also explain why death rates are lower for ordinary cars than for sports cars and muscle cars and lower still for wagons."[1] But the behavioral explanation has a structural problem: midsize wagons share platforms with midsize sedans. Subaru builds the Outback on the same Global Platform as the Legacy, with the same crash structure, the same airbag suite, the same EyeSight driver-assist stack. The Legacy's class (midsize cars) recorded rates of 67 and 65, while the Outback's class recorded 27 and 27. Same engineering, different body, a sixty-percent reduction in the death rate for both the driver and everyone around them.[2]

Our FARS data independently confirms the pattern across a larger temporal window. From 2014 to 2023, the Outback accumulated 707 driver deaths at a rate of 0.45 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, while the Legacy accumulated 287 deaths at 0.95 per 100 million VMT on the same platform.[3] The Outback’s rate is less than half the Legacy’s, and the Legacy is already safer than the fleet median.

Part of this advantage is geometry: a wagon’s longer roofline and extended rear cargo area create a more complete crumple zone in rear impacts than a sedan trunk, which ends abruptly at the C-pillar. just as critically, wagons sit lower than SUVs, so their bumpers and structural beams align with those of other passenger vehicles, so crash energy gets absorbed by designed-for-it steel rather than riding over or under the opposing car’s defenses. An SUV’s higher ride height means its bumper often misses the other vehicle’s bumper entirely, sending force directly into the cabin. IIHS has documented this mismatch extensively in its front crash test program.[4]

And part of it is physics that cuts in everyone’s favor. Wagons typically weigh less than the equivalent SUV: a 2026 Outback weighs 3,640 pounds versus a Forester at 3,590, but the three-row SUVs that replaced wagons in American driveways push 4,500 to 5,500 pounds.[5] Lighter vehicles transfer less force to crash partners. That’s why midsize wagon other-driver death rates (27) are 41 percent lower than midsize SUV other-driver death rates (46), even though both classes carry roughly equivalent driver death rates (27 vs. 24).

But America doesn’t buy wagons. Industry data pegs wagons at under two percent of new vehicle sales, a figure that has been declining since the minivan ate the station wagon in the late 1980s and the SUV ate the minivan after that.[6] The remaining wagons on a U.S. dealer lot in 2026 cost real money: a Volvo V60 starts north of $44,000, the Audi A6 Allroad opens at $59,000, and the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo starts at $92,000. The Subaru Outback, at around $32,000, is the last affordable wagon standing, and Subaru sells it by calling it everything except a wagon.

So the one body style that demonstrably protects its occupants without exporting lethality to everyone else has been priced out of the mainstream market or abandoned entirely by manufacturers who found that raising the same platform onto taller suspension and calling it a "crossover" moved more units. From a sales perspective, this is rational. From a fleet safety perspective, it is an ongoing catastrophe that nobody at NHTSA has the authority or inclination to address, because there is no federal regulation governing how tall a passenger vehicle should be.

The counterargument deserves serious weight. Wagon buyers self-select: they tend to be older, more affluent, and statistically less likely to drive aggressively or impaired. The IIHS data adjusts for driver age and sex but explicitly does not adjust for income, miles driven per day, or rural-versus-urban driving patterns.[1] It is entirely possible that the same people driving wagons would produce equally low death rates in crossover SUVs, and the 27/27 figure reflects the driver, not the vehicle. But that argument undermines the safety case for large SUVs and pickups too, because their low driver-death rates might similarly reflect affluent buyers rather than structural superiority. You can’t claim vehicle size saves occupants while also claiming vehicle type doesn’t matter when the data is inconvenient.

If you’re shopping for a midsize family vehicle and you have $32,000 to $45,000 to spend, the IIHS data says the wagon is the only class that protects you at the same rate it protects the person you might hit. A midsize SUV will protect you slightly better (24 vs. 27 driver deaths) while killing the other driver at nearly twice the rate (46 vs. 27). Check your wagon options at iihs.org/ratings and verify any candidate vehicle’s recall status at nhtsa.gov/recalls. You are looking for a body style that most manufacturers abandoned because it didn’t sell, not because it didn’t work.
