Five TSP+ Winners Have Above-Average Death Rates. Every Vehicle That Failed Has a Below-Average One.

IIHS handed out its 2026 Top Safety Pick+ awards last week, and the Nissan Sentra made the cut. The Sentra has a fleet death rate of 2.13 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, which is 2.37 times the national average.[1] It earned the industry’s highest safety badge while simultaneously, on the actual road where badges carry no legal or physical weight, killing people at more than double the rate of an average car.

The Sentra is not alone. I cross-tabulated every 2026 TSP+ winner against NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System for 2014 through 2023, matching each nameplate to fleet-wide death rates estimated from VMT data.[2] Of the 17 TSP+ winners with available FARS records, five sit above the 0.90 per 100M VMT fleet average: the Sentra (2.13), Toyota Camry (2.03, responsible for 6,328 deaths), Mazda3 (1.63), Hyundai Sonata (1.56), and Nissan Pathfinder (0.93). Those five nameplates account for 11,989 fatalities across the FARS decade, and every one of them passed the most exclusive safety test the industry administers.

Now flip it and look at the vehicles IIHS rejected from its 2026 awards entirely. Four of the five that failed the 2026 evaluation have FARS data, and every single one falls below the national average: the Audi A3 at 0.23 (barely a quarter of the fleet norm), the Nissan Kicks at 0.69, the Toyota Tacoma at 0.80, and the Lexus IS at 0.87. The vehicles IIHS stamped as unsafe are, by the body-count metric that actually follows you home from the dealership, safer than the ones it celebrated.[1]

The obvious objection is fleet age, and it is a strong one. The Camry has existed since 1982; its 6,328 FARS deaths include models built when side curtain airbags were science fiction and electronic stability control was a phrase nobody had coined yet. By contrast, the Hyundai Kona debuted in 2018, so its fleet is inherently newer, inherently safer, and inherently incomparable to a nameplate with four decades of metal on the road. Comparing cumulative fleet death rates that include a 1998 Camry to a current-model-year lab test that measures only the 2026 Camry is, methodologically, comparing fruit across genera.

That objection is correct, and it is also the entire point. When a consumer reads “Top Safety Pick+,” they do not parse the fine print explaining that this badge applies exclusively to the 2026 model year in a controlled lab environment with a specific test matrix that excludes real-world fleet performance entirely; they think safe car. Two words. No asterisk. But the road is a time machine—the average vehicle involved in a fatal crash was manufactured around model year 2007.[2] The Sentra sitting in the used lot for $14,000 is a 2019, its TSP+ badge belongs to the 2026, and the gap between those two model years is where the buyer’s confidence and the actuary’s math diverge completely.

IIHS tests engineering and FARS counts the dead, and the distance between those two measurements is where the false present tense lives—in the space that lets a nameplate carrying nearly 12,000 fatalities wear a sticker that says “safest.”

What You Can Do

If you are shopping for a used car, ignore the badge entirely and look up the specific model year’s FARS fatality data at cdan.dot.gov/query, because a 2019 Sentra and a 2026 Sentra share a nameplate and nothing else that matters when the front end collapses. If you are buying new, a TSP+ rating represents real engineering progress on the specific vehicle rolling off the line, but remember that the badge does not retroactively protect the twenty model years behind it still circulating on American roads.

Limitations

FARS death rates use estimated vehicle miles traveled rather than odometer readings, which introduces roughly ±15% uncertainty for low-volume models. Fleet composition in terms of model years on the road differs radically by nameplate age, and TSP+ tests apply only to the current model year while FARS captures every model year sold under that nameplate. Several 2026 TSP+ winners including the Rivian R1S, Volvo EX90, Tesla Cybertruck, and Kia K4 are too new for any FARS data at all, which means this analysis covers 17 of 49+ TSP+ winners.
