The Civic Gets Safer Every Generation; the Forte Gets Deadlier

I ran the numbers, then I ran them again. I split FARS model-year death counts into two windows, vintages 2009–2016 versus 2017–2023, and averaged deaths per vintage in each.[1] Honda’s Civic dropped 65 percent while Kia’s Forte climbed 43 percent. Both compact sedans gained automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warnings, and better side-curtain coverage over that span, yet only one translated the technology into fewer funerals.

Segment neighbors went the opposite direction: Accord down 62 percent, F-150 down 62 percent, Altima down 69 percent.[1] They compete for the same dealer lots, the same monthly payments, and the same households that end up in FARS.

Toyota’s RAV4 is the most uncomfortable name on that list, because it looks safe from every other angle: America’s best-selling non-truck, an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, overall death rate of 0.19 per 100 million VMT.[2] Yet vintage-to-vintage, its newer model years produce 43 percent more fatalities than its older ones, and a 33 percent sales bump over the same window does not fully account for the gap.[3]

Kicks, Outlander, and Sportage occupy a cheaper, lighter tier where crash physics are less forgiving and the buyer demographic skews younger, inflating crash frequency regardless of structural design.[4] But Honda’s Civic draws from that same demographic sandbox and still managed a 65 percent reduction, making demographics an explanation for some of the divergence rather than an excuse for all of it.

What You Can Do

If you are cross-shopping compact SUVs, look at the trajectory rather than just the snapshot: Subaru’s Forester improved 18 percent over this window while Equinox and Rogue went backward, and for compact sedans the Civic and Accord are separating from the Forte by every generational measure in FARS. Check current ratings at iihs.org/ratings before you sign anything.

Limitations

These are absolute death counts per model-year vintage, not per-vehicle or per-VMT rates, because FARS does not include model-year-level registration counts and sales-volume shifts between generations explain some of the divergence. Discontinued vehicles were filtered by requiring four or more model years in each window, and FARS covers fatal crashes only, so a vehicle with rising fatalities could still have declining injury rates.

Strongest Counterargument

Without model-year-specific registration data, this analysis cannot distinguish between “more people bought the RAV4 so more RAV4s crashed” and “the RAV4 got worse.” A fairer reading is that these seven vehicles failed to translate generational safety improvements into proportionally fewer deaths at the rate their competitors achieved, a weaker claim than “they got more dangerous” but still worth making.
