The Nissan Rogue Killed 127 People in Its Worst Model Year. The RAV4 Never Broke 88.
A single model year of the Nissan Rogue produced 127 fatalities in FARS data, which is 44% more than any vintage of the Toyota RAV4 ever recorded. Both vehicles compete for the same buyer in the same showroom aisle at roughly the same price, yet one sustained triple-digit death counts for four consecutive model years while the other never crossed 90.
Nissan's second-generation Rogue, built on its T32 platform from model year 2014 through 2020, traces a trajectory that should concern anyone shopping the compact SUV segment. Early T32 vintages looked reasonable enough at 43 deaths for MY2014 and 68 for MY2015, numbers that tracked roughly with the vehicle's growing sales volume. Then the curve bent upward and locked into position: MY2016 hit 109, MY2017 peaked at 127, and MY2018 and MY2019 held at 109 and 107 respectively.[1] Four years running above 100 fatalities from a single nameplate is a pattern that demands explanation, particularly when every competitor in the segment was doing something fundamentally different.
Toyota's RAV4 peaked at 88 deaths in MY2019 on its TNGA architecture, then dropped to 55 and 57 for subsequent vintages.[1] Honda redesigned the CR-V for MY2017 and watched deaths fall 26% in a single year, continuing down to 66 and then 30 as the new platform matured. Ford's Escape spiked to a segment-worst 165 in MY2017 but collapsed to 87 the following year, suggesting a one-vintage anomaly rather than a structural deficiency. The Rogue didn't spike and recover; it spiked and plateaued, sustaining elevated fatalities across four complete model-year cohorts before the third-generation CMF-C platform brought numbers back down to 49 for MY2021.
Nissan will point to fleet growth, and they would have a point worth taking seriously. Rogue sales roughly doubled between generations, and more vehicles on the road should mechanically produce more fatalities at any given risk rate, which could in theory explain the raw count increase without implicating the vehicle's engineering. But Toyota sold even more RAV4s during the same period, building a fleet of 3.76 million versus the Rogue's 2.19 million, and the RAV4's per-vehicle death rate lands at 0.24 per thousand fleet while the Rogue sits at 0.44.[1] Nearly double, from a smaller fleet. Mazda's CX-5, occupying the same price bracket with a fleet of 1.05 million, peaked at just 26 deaths in its worst year and runs 0.15 per thousand, which means you would need a magnifying glass to find its deaths if plotted on the same chart as the Rogue's.
Two additional data points complicate the fleet-growth defense. The Rogue's aggregate crash lethality ratio of 54.5% exceeds the compact SUV class average, meaning that in fatal crashes involving a Rogue, a disproportionate share of the dead are Rogue occupants rather than people in the other vehicle.[1] And driver impairment rates sit at 19%, dead-center normal for the segment, which eliminates the hypothesis that the Rogue simply attracts reckless drivers who inflate its numbers through behavior rather than engineering.
Nissan's third-generation Rogue on the CMF-C platform brought MY2021 deaths down to 49, and the current IIHS evaluation awards it Top Safety Pick. But the same badge was given to T32-era models that produced the elevated plateau, so the award alone tells you less than you think.
