The Corvette Is the 50th Most Dangerous Car in America. Or the 81st. Depends Who’s Counting.
Chevrolet's Corvette is the 50th most dangerous car in America if you measure deaths per mile, and the 81st if you measure deaths per registered vehicle. Same car. Same fatalities. Thirty-one ranking positions apart.[1]
Per-mile, the Corvette's 1.52 deaths per 100 million VMT looks deadlier than a Tacoma or a CR-V. Per-car, its 12.19 cumulative deaths per 10,000 registrations across the 2014–2023 FARS window lands between a Fiesta and a Rio, which means a 4,700-pound mid-engine sports car with a 495-horsepower V8 and GM's latest crash structure sits in the same actuarial bucket as two subcompacts that weigh half as much and cost a quarter as much. As a vehicle designer, that contradiction should bother you, because it means one of the two metrics is failing to capture what the engineering actually does.
Mileage explains the gap. Corvette owners average roughly 4,800 miles a year.[2] Silverado owners log north of 15,000. Divide the same fatality count by three times fewer miles and the per-mile rate triples mechanically, producing a ranking that confuses per-mile lethality with annual ownership risk.
Full-size pickups climb when you flip denominators, and climb hard. Silverado jumps ten spots; F-150 does the same. Sierra, Tundra, and Ram each rise eight to ten positions, though the pattern is slightly less dramatic because their fleet sizes dilute differently.[1] High annual mileage spreads their fatality numerators across vast per-mile denominators, making them look moderate per year of ownership when they measurably are not.
Counterargument, at full strength: per-mile IS the correct denominator for vehicle design safety, because every additional mile introduces independent crash risk, and a car at 1.52 per 100M miles is genuinely more dangerous per mile than a hypothetical vehicle at 1.04.[3] NHTSA and IIHS standardize on VMT for this reason. But per-mile answers an engineering question about the machine while per-car answers an actuarial question about the years you will own it, and those two questions diverge badly when annual mileage varies threefold across vehicle types.
Limitations worth spelling out: neither metric controls for demographics. Corvette buyers skew older and wealthier, traits correlated with lower crash rates independent of the vehicle, while pickup buyers skew rural, where higher speeds and sparser trauma infrastructure push risk the other direction.[4] How much of the Corvette's per-car improvement is mileage and how much is driver selection remains an open question. Fleet registration estimates (drawn from state DMV aggregates via FHWA) carry roughly ±15% uncertainty for low-volume models. And the NHTS mileage data dates to 2017, meaning post-pandemic driving shifts could narrow or widen the gap this entire analysis depends on.
Before signing at a dealership, look up your vehicle's per-mile fatality rate at iihs.org/topics/fatality-statistics and estimate your actual annual mileage. Under roughly 8,000 miles a year and the per-mile rate likely overstates your ownership risk; over 14,000 and it flatters a vehicle that will accumulate more crash exposure than any published ranking implies.
