Minnesota's Motorcycle Deaths Are Up 54%. Colorado Just Set a Six-Year Record. Nobody's Aggregating the Picture.

I ran the numbers. Then I ran them again. They didn't get better.

Three state DOTs published motorcycle fatality updates in the first half of 2026. Each reported surges. None referenced the others. NHTSA won't disaggregate Q1 2026 data by vehicle type for another year. So I built a table.

Minnesota logged 37 motorcycle fatalities through June, up from 24 at the same point in 2025.[1] At that trajectory, the state would finish near 90 for the year, approaching its all-time record. Colorado recorded 15 in Q1, tying the worst first quarter in six years.[2] Speed was the primary factor. Half the fatally injured riders wore no helmet. Utah counted 72 deaths in the trailing twelve months through April, a figure their DPS called "unheard of," punctuated by three fatalities in one week.[3] Most were single-vehicle crashes: rider error, loss of control, no other vehicle in the frame.

Nationally, FARS recorded 6,228 motorcyclist deaths in 2024, roughly triple the 2,116 counted in 1997.[5] Motorcycles account for 16% of all U.S. traffic fatalities on 0.6% of total VMT. Per-mile fatality rate: 31.39 per 100M VMT. Passenger cars: 1.13. Ratio: 28:1. That ratio increased 29.5% between 2012 and 2021.[5] Cars got safer. Motorcycles got more popular.

Why state-level data matters: the aggregate masks geographic acceleration. Minnesota's 54% spike is roughly 13 additional deaths across 87 counties. Colorado's Q1 record is 15 people. Both vanish inside a national dataset of 40,000 fatalities. But each state's DOT is independently flagging the same structural pattern: warm early seasons pulling riders onto roads before skills return, in jurisdictions without universal helmet mandates and with thin licensing enforcement. Nationally, 36% of fatally injured motorcyclists had no valid motorcycle license. Twenty-six percent were alcohol-impaired.[5]

Strongest counterargument: Three states is not fifty. Minnesota's entire surplus is 13 deaths, well within the range of random annual variation for a population of 5.7 million. Warm winters would shift seasonal riding earlier without necessarily inflating annual totals. And Utah's "trailing 12-month" window captures a different period than Minnesota's calendar-year comparison or Colorado's Q1 snapshot, making the table structurally heterogeneous. All fair. But the UK's 384-death national dataset shows the same directional shift with a much larger sample, and three independent DOTs raising alarms with no coordination between them deserves documentation even if Q4 data revises the annual picture downward. The absence of counterexamples is itself a data gap: we do not know how many states are trending the opposite direction, because they didn't issue press releases.

What this analysis cannot tell you: Whether the three-state pattern holds nationally. NHTSA does not publish state-level motorcycle fatality data in real time, so this table is drawn exclusively from states alarmed enough to say something publicly. VMT-adjusted rates by state are unavailable for 2026. Registration counts and new license-endorsement data, which would separate exposure growth from risk growth, are absent from all three DOT reports. This is survivorship bias in reverse: we are literally seeing only the worst performers who chose to speak up.

What to do with this data: If you ride in a state reporting a surge, assume the national safety trend does not include you. Wear a full-face DOT/ECE helmet regardless of state law. Take or retake the MSF Basic RiderCourse ($350, two days). Ride sober. Ride licensed. The 0.99-per-100M-VMT dashboard number does not describe your lane.
