A Corroded $2 Switch Just Put 310,000 Mercedes at Risk of Rolling Away

Mercedes-Benz is recalling 310,667 vehicles in the United States because a micro-switch inside the driver’s door lock can corrode, prevent the car from detecting that the door is open, and silently disable the automatic parking brake.[1] The car thinks the door is closed, the driver gets out, the brake never engages, and the vehicle rolls.

Affected models span nearly the entire compact and mid-size lineup: CLA, A-Class, C-Class, CLE, GLA, GLB, and GLC. NHTSA confirmed the recall Thursday, and dealers will replace the driver’s door lock assembly at no cost, which is a polite way of saying Mercedes will spend millions of dollars swapping out a component that probably cost less than the gas station coffee you bought on the way to the dealership.[1]

Rollaways are not theoretical risks. About 2,000 Americans die from them every year, according to advocacy group KidsAndCars.org, and the victims are disproportionately children and elderly bystanders who cannot move fast enough when a two-ton sedan starts creeping down a driveway.[4] Ford recalled its Expedition and Lincoln Navigator fleet this year for a transmission software defect that could damage the park mechanism and produce the same result: a vehicle rolling away after the driver walks off.[3] Now Mercedes joins the rollaway club through a different failure path, bypassing both the transmission and the software to land on a corroded switch in the door.

What makes this defect architecturally interesting is the dependency chain it reveals. Nothing breaks in the parking brake itself; the mechanism works perfectly. What fails is a micro-switch in the door lock, which tells the body control module whether the door is open, which tells the parking brake controller whether it should engage. A corroded contact in a $2 electromechanical component silences a signal that a $55,000 safety suite needs in order to function, and neither crash tests nor IIHS ratings evaluate this kind of failure. A single-point-of-failure embedded three layers deep in a system that marketing describes as “intelligent” and “advanced.”

FARS data from 2014 to 2023 offers a less flattering angle on the brand’s driver population. Across 4,649 Mercedes-Benz drivers involved in fatal crashes, 21.9 percent tested positive for alcohol, drugs, or both—running above the luxury brand average of 20.9 percent and well above Lexus (19.3%) or Lincoln (19.0%).[2] Specifically, the E-Class clocks 23.5 percent impairment among its 1,415 drivers in fatal crashes. For the C-Class, which sits squarely in the middle of this recall’s affected models, 21.8 percent.

Credit where it lands: Mercedes vehicles themselves are not especially lethal. A C-Class death rate of 0.63 per 100 million VMT, an E-Class at 0.64, both below the sedan class average of roughly 2.0, both dramatically below the worst sedans in the FARS dataset. Mercedes builds cars that protect occupants in crashes. Where things go wrong is after the occupants get out.

Picture an impaired driver parking a GLC in a driveway at 11 p.m., exactly the scenario where a silent rollaway becomes lethal. Shift to park (or think you do), open the door, step out, walk toward the house. That corroded micro-switch never registers the open door, so the auto-park brake never engages, and two tons of German engineering start creeping backward. A sober driver might hear it, might feel the absence of the expected brake clunk, might turn around, but an impaired driver is already fumbling with the house keys. A cheap component failure multiplied by a behavioral profile the component’s designers probably assumed away.

Mercedes is the third luxury manufacturer to issue a major recall this year for a failure mode that no crash test evaluates. BMW has recalled PHEV models twice for starter motor fires. Cadillac’s CT5 earned IIHS poor ratings in two crash tests, proving that even the test regime can surprise a brand that expected to pass.[5] Same thread running through all of them: not negligence, but architectural hubris. Systems designed to be intelligent that remain catastrophically dependent on individual components designed to be cheap.

Limitations

FARS data captures only fatal crashes, covering the roughly 36,000 annual deaths but not the 6.7 million total crashes. Impairment rates are based on toxicology results recorded at the time of the crash and may be incomplete, as not all jurisdictions test all fatally involved drivers. Mercedes impairment data spans 2014 to 2023 and cannot be directly attributed to the specific model years affected by this recall (which skew newer). Death rate estimates use VMT calculated from fleet size and average annual mileage by vehicle class, introducing ±15% uncertainty for lower-volume models. KidsAndCars.org’s rollaway fatality estimate of 2,000 per year comes from advocacy research and has not been independently replicated by NHTSA.

The Counterargument

Mercedes discovered this defect and reported it voluntarily, offering a straightforward, free fix. When the recall system works as designed, it looks exactly like this: a manufacturer identifies a risk before it causes mass casualties and acts. Mercedes death rates in FARS are genuinely low, among the lowest in their respective segments, and their crash avoidance technology has earned multiple IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards. A corroded micro-switch in a door lock is not a design philosophy; it is a supplier quality issue, and conflating it with the brand’s impairment statistics requires a causal leap the data cannot support. Impaired drivers who miss a rollaway event are impaired enough to cause a crash regardless of what the door lock does.
