A Quarter-Million Land Rovers Have Airbags That Won't Fire. The Fix Is a Dab of Gel.

Somewhere inside your steering column is a coiled ribbon of copper and plastic called a clockspring. It lets the airbag's electrical circuit stay connected while you turn the wheel left, right, left again, ten thousand times a year. It is one of the oldest, simplest ideas in automotive safety wiring, and it just failed across a quarter-million luxury SUVs because the act of driving shook the connectors apart.[1]

On June 25, NHTSA formally recalled 250,857 Land Rover Defender (2020–2026), Discovery (2021–2026), and Range Rover (2022–2026) vehicles. Not some of them, not a production batch or a supplier lot, but all of them. NHTSA's estimate of the defect rate is 100%.[1] Every single vehicle that rolled off the line with that clockspring connector has it, and the problem is what engineers call fretting corrosion: microscopic vibrations during normal driving gradually build oxide deposits on the connector pins, increasing electrical resistance until the circuit can no longer fire the airbag inflator when the crash sensor tells it to.[2]

Read that again. Driving the vehicle causes the safety system to fail.

Lubricant as a Safety Intervention

Land Rover's fix, at least for now, is protective lubricant gel applied to the connector terminals at the dealership. No redesigned part, no replacement clockspring, just gel.[3] A second notification will be mailed when a "more permanent solution" becomes available, which is a polite way of saying nobody has one yet. Production vehicles built after late May 2026 already have the gel applied at the factory. Everybody else waits for a letter arriving no sooner than August 7.

Land Rover did get one thing right: they issued a stop-sale before NHTSA published the recall, pulling all three models from dealer lots. That is genuinely proactive, and it is also a tacit admission that every unsold vehicle sitting on every lot in America has an airbag that might not work.

A Pattern, Not an Anomaly

Clockspring failures are not new. In 2023 and 2024, component supplier American Furukawa triggered recalls across Toyota, Ford, and Stellantis vehicles after manufacturing contamination compromised 85,515 clocksprings, deactivating driver airbags entirely.[4] Back in 2016, FCA recalled 2007–2010 Jeep Wranglers because dust ingestion into the clockspring could knock out the airbag circuit, and the permanent remedy parts weren't available at the time of the interim notice.[5] Even Lotus published a technical service bulletin warning that mixing tin-plated and gold-plated clockspring terminals would eventually corrode the connection and disable the airbag.[6]

Four manufacturers, three countries, a decade of clockspring connector failures all producing the same outcome: driver airbag non-deployment. And in every case the initial fix was either interim, delayed, or a materials workaround rather than a fundamental redesign of the connector interface. Nobody has asked, publicly, whether the industry's standard clockspring connector architecture is adequate for a component whose failure mode is "your airbag doesn't exist anymore."

What This Costs

Defenders start at $56,400, Discoverys at $60,200, and Range Rovers clear $105,000 before you pick a color.[7] A conservative average transaction price across the affected fleet sits around $80,000, putting roughly $20 billion in consumer investment behind a driver airbag circuit that degrades every time the steering wheel vibrates over a railroad crossing. You pay six figures for a vehicle whose airbag connector lacks the corrosion resistance of a $12 marine-grade terminal block from a hardware store.

What the Warning Light Actually Means

Land Rover's engineering analysis found that the airbag warning lamp illuminates 300 to 400 miles before potential non-deployment.[2] That sounds reassuring until you consider two things: first, we have no data on what percentage of drivers respond to an illuminated airbag warning light within that window. Second, 300 miles at highway speeds is roughly four and a half hours of driving. If the light comes on at the start of a road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco, you would arrive at your destination with an airbag that might no longer function, and you might not know it unless you're the kind of person who reads dashboard warnings instead of podcasts.

Limitations

No reported non-deployments, crashes, or injuries in the U.S. to date. That is not nothing, and it might mean the degradation rate is slow enough that most vehicles will be serviced before a real crash tests the circuit. It might mean the warning light is doing its job. We don't have defect progression rates by climate zone, so we can't say whether vehicles in humid or salt-air environments are failing faster. FARS data for Land Rover models is too thin (26 fatal crashes for Range Rover Sport over 2014–2023) to draw vehicle-specific fatality conclusions. We also don't know whether other manufacturers using the same connector supplier are vulnerable to identical fretting corrosion.

What You Should Do

If you own a 2020–2026 Defender, 2021–2026 Discovery, or 2022–2026 Range Rover: do not wait for the August letter. Call Land Rover customer service at 800-637-6837 and reference recall number D120. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. If your airbag warning light is on, stop driving the vehicle until a dealer inspects it. Seriously. An airbag that cannot deploy is not a reduced-function airbag. It is a plastic bag full of explosive powder connected to nothing.
