The Nissan Kicks Has a Higher Per-Crash Kill Rate Than the Average Sedan

Nissan sells the Kicks as an SUV. It sits in the SUV section of their website, parked between the Rogue and the Armada. Consumers cross-shop it against other "crossover SUVs." And when they drive it off the lot, they believe they bought something safer than the sedan they traded in. FARS data says they bought something worse.

In NHTSA's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (2014-2023 data), the Nissan Kicks appears in 459 fatal crashes.[1] In 339 of those, the Kicks occupant died. That's a per-crash lethality of 0.739, meaning nearly three out of four times, you don't walk away. SUV class average? 0.524. Sedan class average, the one Kicks buyers think they're beating? 0.645. It doesn't beat sedans. It loses to them.

Physics dressed up as marketing explains the gap. First-generation Kicks models (2018-2024) ride on Nissan's V-platform, the exact same architecture under the Versa sedan.[2] Curb weight sits around 2,425 pounds. Front-wheel drive only. A 1.6-liter four-cylinder pushing through a CVT. Nissan added 0.4 inches of ride height, some plastic body cladding, and the letters S-U-V to the marketing materials. They did not add the structural mass, the longer wheelbase, or the crumple zone depth that makes actual SUVs survivable.

Within Nissan's own showroom, the comparison is damning. Their volume crossover, the Rogue, manages 0.545 lethality. Pathfinder: 0.499. Armada: 0.483. Even the discontinued Xterra, a body-on-frame relic, posted 0.535. Every other SUV Nissan sells or has sold protects its occupants better than the Kicks. Only the 350Z, a two-seat sports car, is more lethal per crash in Nissan's entire fleet.

Most uncomfortable data point: the Kicks is actually marginally deadlier per crash than the Versa sedan it's supposed to replace. Versa lethality is 0.723. Kicks lethality is 0.739. Upgrading to an SUV bought negative protection. You paid more money for a higher seating position and a worse survival probability. Independent analysis from RealSafeCars confirms it: the 2023 Kicks is "19% more likely to result in a fatal accident" than the average vehicle.[3]

Among subcompact crossovers, the spread is enormous. Jeep's Renegade, built on Fiat's small-wide architecture with available AWD, posts 0.381 lethality. Subaru's Crosstrek, with standard symmetrical AWD and their ring-shaped reinforcement frame: 0.439. Honda's HR-V: 0.534. These vehicles prove that small crossovers can protect occupants. Nissan just didn't build one that does.

Methodology

Per-crash lethality = occupant deaths ÷ total fatal crashes involving the vehicle in FARS (2014-2023). This metric isolates structural protection by measuring: when a fatal crash happens, how often does this vehicle's occupant die versus survive while someone else (other vehicle, pedestrian) perishes? A Ram 2500 at 0.205 means its occupant survives 80% of fatal crashes. A Kicks at 0.739 means its occupant dies 74% of the time. Lower is better. Dramatically lower.

Limitations

FARS captures only the ~36,000 annual fatal crashes, not the roughly 6.7 million total. A vehicle's lethality ratio can be influenced by crash-type distribution, road environment, and driver demographics. Budget buyers at the Kicks' ~$21,600 MSRP price point skew younger and face higher-risk driving conditions. This analysis does not control for crash severity, impact speed, or single-vehicle versus multi-vehicle split. A second-generation Kicks (2025+), fully redesigned on the CMF-B platform, earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick[4] and may perform very differently in future FARS data.

Strongest Counterargument

Cheap vehicles attract riskier driving scenarios. Budget buyers are more likely to commute on high-speed stroads, less likely to have advanced driver-assistance systems enabled, and statistically younger. Some portion of the Kicks' high lethality reflects who's driving it and where, not just how it's built. A controlled study matching crash types and impact speeds might narrow the gap. But it wouldn't close it. At 2,425 pounds, the Kicks sits in a world where average new-vehicle curb weight exceeds 4,300.[5] Physics does not negotiate with marketing copy.
