Same Platform, 3.9× Death Gap: The GM T1 Paradox

General Motors builds three full-size SUVs on a single body-on-frame platform. Same steel ladder frame. Same 5.3L or 6.2L V8. Same crash structures bolted to the same mounting points. The Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, and Cadillac Escalade roll off assembly lines that share so much tooling that GM's own engineers joke about them being the same truck wearing different costumes.[1] Between 2014 and 2023, the Tahoe killed at 2.49 deaths per 100 million VMT, the Suburban at 1.36, and the Escalade at 0.64.

Strip away the trim and you're left with one question: if the bones are identical, why does the Escalade have a fatality rate nearly four times lower than the Tahoe? Almost nothing about that gap traces to engineering. In FARS data covering a decade of fatal crashes, all three vehicles show crash-to-death ratios within a razor margin of each other: Tahoe at 1.96, Suburban at 1.94, Escalade at 2.14.[2] Translation: once any of these vehicles is involved in a fatal crash scenario, the odds of the occupant dying are functionally the same. All three protect their occupants equally. What differs is how often each vehicle ends up in that fatal scenario at all.

Wheelbase offers one clue. Across generations, the Suburban's wheelbase stretches approximately 14 inches beyond the Tahoe's: 130 vs. 116 inches on the GMT800/900 platform, 134.1 vs. 120.9 on the current T1.[3] Longer wheelbase means a lower ratio of height to track width, and for body-on-frame SUVs, that means meaningfully better rollover resistance. The Suburban's 45% lower death rate lines up with what the physics predicts. It is, structurally, a more stable vehicle. Those 14 inches of additional frame rail buy real survivability.

The Escalade is the stranger case. It sits on the Tahoe's exact wheelbase. Same dimensions. Same ground clearance. Same curb weight within a few hundred pounds of optioned-up equipment. Yet its rate is 0.64 versus the Tahoe's 2.49. Not slightly lower. Not 20% lower. Seventy-four percent lower. And the Escalade's driver population has the highest impairment rate of the three: 22.0% tested positive for alcohol or drugs, compared to 20.6% in Tahoes and 20.3% in Suburbans. Escalade drivers drink more and die less. GM's GMC-badged Yukon confirms the pattern is real: its rate of 2.55 nearly matches the Tahoe's 2.49, proving that the badge isn't the variable. Something about who buys an Escalade, where they drive it, and when produces a dramatically different outcome from the identical vehicle sold to a different buyer at half the price.

There are legitimate caveats. FARS estimates vehicle miles traveled from fleet registration data, not odometers, and luxury vehicles tend to accumulate fewer annual miles than their mass-market siblings. If Escalade owners drive 40% fewer miles than assumed, the adjusted rate climbs to roughly 1.1, which still undercuts the Suburban. The Tahoe fleet includes a non-trivial number of police interceptors running emergency responses and pursuits that inflate its crash exposure per mile. And the vast majority of deaths across all three models come from GMT800/900-era vehicles built before 2010: 88% for the Tahoe, 82% for the Suburban. This comparison reflects two decades of the platform, not just the current T1 generation. Even so, the gap is too large for estimation noise alone.

If you are shopping full-size SUVs in 2026, the data points in one direction. Stretch the wheelbase: buy the Suburban over the Tahoe, or the Expedition Max over the standard Expedition. If you can afford the Escalade, its buyers historically land in far fewer fatal crash scenarios per mile, though that says more about roads and driving patterns than about anything Cadillac bolted to the frame. What the T1 platform reveals is uncomfortable for the entire vehicle safety apparatus. GM's engineers delivered the same crashworthiness across all three trims. NHTSA would test them and find essentially identical star ratings. IIHS would note the same structural geometry. The 3.9x death gap has nothing to do with what the engineers built and everything to do with what happens after the customer signs the paperwork. Fourteen extra inches of wheelbase cuts the rate by 45%. A wealthier buyer demographic, driving on quieter suburban roads at calmer hours, cuts it by 74%. Safety ratings measure the car. FARS measures the system. They are telling very different stories.
