GM Recalled 600,000 V8 Engines for Seizing at Highway Speed. The Fix for Most Owners Was an Oil Change.
In April 2025, General Motors recalled 597,630 trucks and SUVs because the L87 6.2-liter V8 had a manufacturing defect in its connecting rod and crankshaft assembly that could cause the engine to seize while the vehicle was moving at highway speed, stranding families in active traffic lanes with no propulsion and no warning.[1] GM attributed the defect to multiple supplier quality issues and told owners to bring their vehicles in for a fix, and most of them did, because that is what you do when the manufacturer of your $60,000 truck tells you the engine might lock up on the freeway. Nearly seven thousand of them have now reported that the engine failed again anyway.
NHTSA's own complaint database contains 499 post-remedy failure reports, a subset of GM's larger count, but it breaks them down in a way that reveals the core problem with the recall's design.[2] Of those 499 failures, 473 occurred in vehicles that received what GM called the standard remedy: a switch to higher-viscosity oil, a new fill cap, and a replacement oil filter. Twenty-six occurred in vehicles whose engines were replaced entirely. That split is not ambiguous: 95 percent of the post-fix failures came from the version of the fix that left the original defective engine in the truck and changed the oil around it.
GM's recall remedy worked on a branching logic that hinged on a dealer diagnostic test. Owners who brought their vehicles in were given one of two paths: if the engine passed the diagnostic, the dealership switched the oil to a higher viscosity formulation, replaced the cap and filter, and sent the owner home; if the engine failed the diagnostic, the dealership replaced the entire engine.[2] The diagnostic became the gate between a ten-minute oil change and a five-figure engine swap, and four hundred and seventy-three NHTSA complaints suggest the gate was not particularly good at its job. GM hedged its own bet by attaching a special coverage program to every vehicle that passed, protecting the engine for 10 years or 150,000 miles, an implicit acknowledgment that passing the test did not mean the engine was sound.
On August 21, 2026, NHTSA escalated and expanded the investigation to 997,743 vehicles by adding 2025 and 2026 model years to the original 2021 through 2024 range, a decision that raises a question GM has not publicly answered: if the supplier defect was identified and corrected in production, why are 191 engine failure complaints coming from vehicles built after the recall production window closed?[2] An engineering analysis is the required procedural step before NHTSA can compel an expanded recall or mandate additional repairs, which means the agency is now one administrative decision away from forcing GM's hand.
Before the recall, GM's own investigation had already logged roughly 28,000 complaints, and approximately half of those described the vehicle losing propulsion while driving, a failure mode that turns a mechanical problem into a traffic safety emergency.[1] GM identified 12 crashes, 12 injuries, and 42 fire reports potentially linked to the defect, yet the company opened three separate internal investigations between 2022 and 2024 without issuing a recall until NHTSA launched its own probe in January 2025, more than two years after GM first looked at the data.
The gap between GM's complaint count and NHTSA's underscores a structural weakness in the federal safety net: GM reports 6,953 post-fix engine failures while NHTSA has 499 in its own database, a ratio of roughly fourteen to one. That disparity is not unusual for the auto industry, where manufacturers are required to collect and report complaint data but owners are not required to file separately with the government, meaning NHTSA's statistical models for triggering investigations are working against a denominator that systematically undercounts real-world failure rates, and any threshold-based trigger is slower to activate than the actual pace of harm.
The affected vehicles span six nameplates across three GM brands: Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, and Suburban; GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL; and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, all equipped with the 6.2-liter L87 from model years 2021 through 2026. If the pattern holds, GM will issue a second recall. Whether the second remedy involves actually replacing the engines this time, or whether GM's metallurgists discover yet another miracle oil, will determine whether this investigation closes or generates a third round of complaints and a timeline that starts to resemble a recurring subscription.
Counterargument: GM could reasonably argue that the oil viscosity change was an engineered response targeting the specific failure mechanism, not a shortcut, and that the dealer diagnostic was calibrated to separate engines with imminent metallurgical risk from those with adequate tolerance. The special coverage program extending protection to 10 years and 150,000 miles exists precisely because GM anticipated that some passed engines would eventually fail and built a warranty net to handle them. It is also possible that the 95-to-5 ratio in post-fix complaints simply reflects the base rate of fix types: if 90 percent of recalled vehicles received oil rather than engine replacements, a 95 percent share of complaints from the oil-fix group would not indicate a meaningfully higher failure rate per vehicle.
Limitations: NHTSA's 499 post-remedy complaints are a self-selected sample, not a controlled study, and we do not know what share of total recalled vehicles received each fix type, which means the 95/5 ratio cannot be converted to a per-vehicle failure rate without that denominator. GM's 6,953 figure is self-reported and not independently verified by NHTSA. The 191 failures in post-recall production vehicles could reflect either ongoing supplier defects or unrelated engine issues. This analysis relies entirely on complaint data, which skews toward owners who experienced complete failure and excludes those whose engines degraded without total seizure.
