Hyundai Recalled 14 EVs for Zero Fires. Their ICE Fleet Has Killed 9,931 People.
On Monday, Hyundai and Kia recalled fourteen electric vehicles. Six Ioniq 5s, seven EV6s, one EV9. Battery cells supplied by SK On might have misaligned electrodes. Could cause a short circuit. Could, theoretically, start a fire.
Fires reported: zero. Crashes: zero. Injuries: zero.
Cross-reference that 14-vehicle recall against FARS, and a number falls out that the recall notice didn't mention. Hyundai-Kia's gasoline fleet has accumulated 9,931 fatalities in the NHTSA fatality database from 2014 to 2023. Divide that by the fourteen EVs the regulatory apparatus deemed urgent enough to pull. You get 709. For every electric vehicle Hyundai-Kia recalled over a battery anomaly that harmed nobody, their internal-combustion cars killed 709 people.[1][2]
The standout is the Veloster. Rate of 8.54 deaths per 100 million vehicle-miles traveled, 598 fatalities over the study period. That is not a car with a defect. That is a car whose design is the defect. Hyundai sold it for a decade. Nobody issued a recall for being a coffin with a turbocharger.[1]
This is not an argument that the EV recall was wrong. Catching a cell-alignment problem in 14 batteries before anyone gets hurt is the system working exactly as intended. The question is why the same system treats 993 annual deaths across the Elantra (2,407 total), Sonata (1,887), and the rest of the lineup as weather. Not a defect. Just physics. The battery gets a recall campaign number and a press release. The body count gets a database entry and a shrug.[1]
Regulatory language is the trick. A "defect" is a deviation from the manufacturer's design intent. Misaligned battery electrodes deviate. A lightweight sports car that disintegrates on impact does not. It is performing as designed. The 8.54 rate is a feature, not a bug, at least in the vocabulary NHTSA uses to decide what counts as broken.
So fourteen vehicles get recalled before they hurt anyone. And 9,931 families learn that "performing as designed" is not the same thing as safe.
If you drive a Hyundai or Kia EV from the affected batches, check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. If you drive a Veloster, Elantra, or Sonata, understand that no recall is coming for the death rate. Check IIHS ratings before you buy, not after. And when someone tells you EVs are dangerous because batteries catch fire, ask them to do the division.
