The 4Runner Kills at 5× the Rate of the RAV4. Toyota Sells Both.
Toyota makes two SUVs that start under $40,000. One of them, the RAV4, has a fatality rate of 0.19 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. Its sibling, the 4Runner, has a fatality rate of 1.00.[1] Same company. Same showroom. A factor of five.
Between 2014 and 2023, 1,418 people died in Toyota 4Runners. That is more than the Jeep Grand Cherokee (1,161), more than the Nissan Pathfinder (712), and within striking distance of the Jeep Wrangler (1,842). It sits in the upper tier of SUV body counts, yet Toyota's safety halo means it almost never gets named in the same breath as those vehicles.[1]
And the deaths are not randomly distributed across model years. They cluster.
The Third Generation Killed Half of Them
The 4Runner's third generation ran from 1996 to 2002. Body-on-frame, rear-wheel drive, optional four-wheel drive. No stability control. A high center of gravity and a willingness to go sideways in conditions that a unibody crossover would simply understeer through. Enthusiasts call it the best 4Runner ever built. FARS data says it produced 716 of the 4Runner's 1,418 deaths. That is 50.7% of the total, from seven model years of a vehicle sold across nearly four decades.[1]
Model year 1998 was the worst single vintage: 136 fatalities. Model year 1997 was second at 131. These trucks were 16 to 19 years old when the FARS observation window opened in 2014. They were aging, losing value, and migrating to second and third owners who may have maintained them less carefully. They were also accumulating fatal crashes at a rate that dwarfs anything in Toyota's current lineup.
What Changed
The fourth generation (2003–2009) averaged 42 deaths per model year. The fifth generation (2010–2024), which shipped with Toyota's Vehicle Stability Control as standard equipment, dropped further. That generational death curve tracks exactly what IIHS and NHTSA have documented about electronic stability control: FMVSS 126 mandated ESC for all new vehicles starting with model year 2012, and vehicles that adopted it earlier saw immediate results.[2]
The 4Runner got there in 2010. Two model years ahead of the deadline. Gen5 numbers reflect it.
Not a Drunk Driving Story
When a vehicle has a high death rate, impairment is the first thing to check. Its toxicology profile is unremarkable: 20.6% of drivers in fatal crashes tested positive for alcohol or drugs, against a 19.5% average for the SUV class.[1] This is not a vehicle disproportionately driven by impaired people. Sober drivers are dying in it at rates that should make Toyota's safety engineers uncomfortable.
The Fragility Tax
When a 4Runner is in a fatal crash, its occupant dies 55.2% of the time. For the RAV4, that number is 49.8%. For the Grand Cherokee, 44.0%. For the Tundra, 41.5%.[1] The 4Runner is not just involved in more fatal crashes per mile than its competitors. It is also worse at protecting its occupants once the crash happens.
Part of this is physics. Gen3 and Gen4 models had a tall, narrow body sitting on a truck frame. That geometry raises the center of gravity, increasing rollover propensity. Rollovers are among the most lethal crash types, and a body-on-frame SUV in a rollover is a box tumbling off its chassis rails.
Part of it is demographics. Buyers take it off-road, into rural areas, and down unpaved roads where emergency response times are longer and crash speeds are higher. A fatal crash on a mountain fire road is not the same as a fatal crash at an urban intersection. This is a genuine confound. But the death/crash ratio measures what happens after the crash starts, not where it happens. And the 4Runner underperforms there regardless of geography.
The Cult Premium
A clean 1998 4Runner Limited with under 200,000 miles now commands $12,000 to $18,000 on the used market. Its mechanical simplicity, body-on-frame durability, and trail capability make it a collector vehicle in everything but name. Forums rank it as the definitive 4Runner. Overlanding accounts build them into expedition rigs.
None of that reputation includes a disclosure that the 1997–2000 model years produced 504 FARS-documented deaths in a single four-year window, without stability control, without side-curtain airbags, and with a structural geometry that amplifies rollover severity.
What This Means If You Are Shopping
If you want a 4Runner, the Gen5 (2010–2024) is a different animal from what came before it. Standard stability control, improved structure, meaningfully lower fatality counts per model year. Gen6 (2025+) moves to the TNGA-F platform with a modern safety suite. That death curve is unambiguous: newer is safer, and the magnitude of improvement is large.
If you want a Gen3 because you love its simplicity and off-road purity, know what you are buying. A 1996–2002 4Runner is a vehicle without ESC, without modern crash structure, and with a center of gravity that FARS says contributed to killing 716 people in a ten-year observation window. Dealers price the Gen3 as a collector. FARS prices it as a liability.
