388,000 Ford Explorers Have Seats That Unlatch While Driving. The SUV Already Kills 380 People a Year.

Ford recalled 387,911 vehicles this week because the second-row seats can tip forward and slide while the vehicle is moving.[1] Not during a crash, not on impact — while you are driving down the highway with your children buckled into the second row, the seat itself can unlatch from its mount, pitch forward, and travel along the floor track. Affected models: 2020–2026 Ford Explorers and 2020–2027 Lincoln Aviators.

No Ford SUV kills more people. Over a decade of FARS data, the Explorer accumulated 3,797 fatalities across 6,626 fatal crashes, producing a fatality rate of 1.54 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.[2] Triple the Toyota Highlander at 0.42, triple the Honda CR-V at 0.53, and fifty percent higher than Ford’s own Escape at 0.95.

Crash lethality tells a separate story. In 57.3% of fatal crashes involving an Explorer, the dead person was inside the Explorer — compared to 44.0% for a Jeep Grand Cherokee, 45.4% for a Highlander. When this SUV is in a fatal crash, its own occupants die at a rate that exceeds most competitors in the segment.

Now add a seat that moves. Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group documented 14 reports of unintended second-row seat movement while the vehicle was in drive.[1] Six of those occurred in vehicles already fixed under an earlier recall for the exact same problem. A comedically simple mechanism: the easy-entry switch for the second-row outer seats binds or sticks in the down position, allowing the seat to unlatch, tip, or slide without anyone touching anything.

Ford reports zero crashes and zero injuries from this defect, which is probably true. But walk through the scenario they’re describing. A child in a forward-facing car seat is strapped to a second-row bench that can, without warning, pitch forward and slide toward the driver’s seatback. If a LATCH-anchored child seat separates from a displaced bench, or the harness bears loads it was never certified to handle, the restraint geometry is destroyed before any collision even begins. FARS has no field for “occupant displaced by seat failure prior to impact.” Any resulting fatality would be coded as a standard unrestrained-occupant death, the seat defect rendered invisible in the data.

Owner notification letters are going out this month. Actual repairs won’t be available until January 2027 at the earliest — meaning Ford is asking families to keep driving a vehicle with a known seat-displacement hazard through an entire holiday season, school-year start, and five months of winter. And the fix is a replacement switch bezel and housing. Not a structural reinforcement, just a plastic cover.

Ford has sold the Explorer as its family-SUV flagship for three decades, building a reputation as a safe, practical vehicle for hauling kids and cargo, but FARS disagrees at 380 dead per year. Now 388,000 of those vehicles have seats that can unlatch while you drive, a defect Ford already tried to fix once and failed, and the permanent repair is six months away. If your kid rides in the second row, check the easy-entry switch before your next trip. Button stuck down means the seat may already be loose.
