Ford Recalled 676,000 Explorers This Week. It Already Kills at 5x the Rate of a Honda Pilot.
Ford filed two Explorer recalls in the same week. The first covers 387,911 vehicles whose second-row seats can unlatch, tip, or slide while the SUV is moving.[1] Fourteen owners reported it happening. Six of those vehicles had already been recalled and repaired for the same problem once before. The second covers 288,314 older Explorers whose roof rail covers can detach at highway speed.[2] Combined: 676,225 Explorers recalled in a single week.
This is the vehicle that NHTSA has already recalled eight times for the 2026 model year alone.[3] The 2026 Explorer earns a reliability score of 72 out of 100, placing it 19th out of 26 midsize SUVs. And still Ford sells roughly 200,000 of them every year, because it has a badge and a fleet discount and because most buyers never check the recall database before signing.
They should. FARS data from 2014 through 2023 records 3,797 deaths in Ford Explorers at a rate of 1.54 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.[4] That is the highest death rate of any midsize SUV in the FARS dataset — not close to the highest, the highest. Honda’s Pilot, which competes in the same showroom aisle, has a rate of 0.29; Toyota’s Highlander sits at 0.42; Chevrolet’s Traverse, which costs roughly the same and seats more people, manages 0.20. Per mile driven, the Explorer kills at 5.3 times the Pilot’s rate and 7.7 times the Traverse’s.
Its crash lethality tells the same story: when an Explorer is involved in a fatal crash, the Explorer occupant dies 57.3% of the time, the highest crash lethality of any midsize SUV in the database. By comparison, Traverse occupants die 39.3% of the time, Highlander occupants 45.4%, and Pilot occupants 45.3%.[4] In a vehicle class designed around the premise that bigger means safer, the Explorer manages to be big and still lose. Its occupants absorb a disproportionate share of crash energy despite sitting in one of the heavier vehicles on the road.
Part of this is fleet age, since a significant fraction of the Explorer fleet predates the 2020 redesign, and those older fifth-generation models had well-documented structural and rollover concerns tracing back to the Firestone tire scandal of the early 2000s. But fleet age cannot explain a 5x gap. The Grand Cherokee has a similar proportion of aging vehicles and manages a rate of 0.51, and the Pathfinder sits at 0.93. Only the Explorer crosses into rates typically reserved for sedans and sports cars.
Recall math compounds the exposure further. Ford has now recalled the Explorer for seats that move while driving, roofs that shed parts, transmissions that let the vehicle roll away when parked, hybrid pedestrian alert systems that Ford fixed once and then had to recall again because the fix failed, engine piston circlips, and seat belt anchor bolts.[1][2][5] This is not a vehicle with one bad supplier batch. This is a vehicle with a quality system producing defects across multiple subsystems at a rate that suggests the process itself is broken.
Ford has framed its recall volume as evidence that its quality program is working, that it catches problems early. An Autoblog analysis politely noted that early catches are less impressive when the defects appear in vehicles that have only been on sale for a few months.[3] Clara Rollover will frame it differently: when six of fourteen seat-movement complaints came from vehicles that had already received the recall remedy, the quality program caught the problem, deployed a fix, and the fix did not work. That is not a system catching errors — it is a system generating them.
If you own a 2020 through 2026 Ford Explorer, check whether the second-row easy-entry button is stuck in the down position — that is the tell. If it sticks, do not use the second row until the dealer replaces the switch bezel and housing. Ford says notification letters will arrive later this month, but the actual repair parts will not be available until January 2027. In the meantime, Ford is asking owners of a vehicle with 3,797 FARS deaths and a seat that can tip while driving to wait six months for the fix. If you are shopping for a midsize SUV today, the Highlander, Pilot, and Traverse all cost within a few thousand dollars of the Explorer. Their death rates are one-quarter to one-seventh as high. Their recall histories are not measured by the dozen. Clara Rollover recommends reading the NHTSA recall database before the dealer's financing worksheet. It loads faster and costs less.
