The Same ECU Bug Hit Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru at Once. That’s Not a Coincidence.
A race condition in one Denso chip just killed propulsion across 20,991 electric vehicles spanning three brands and a single shared platform.
Denso part number 89890-42381 sits inside every 2026 Toyota bZ, Lexus RZ, and Subaru Solterra built on Toyota’s e-TNGA architecture, where two integrated circuits in the battery ECU share a memory address location, which is the kind of resource-sharing decision that saves pennies per unit until it doesn’t, because under high CPU load that spikes when the battery drops to a low state of charge, one circuit overwrites what the other just wrote.[1] Enough overwrites and the ECU fails its own operational check, the electric drive system shuts down at whatever speed you happen to be traveling, and while steering and brakes stay live, propulsion does not.
Toyota engineers caught this exact condition in August 2025 while testing a plug-in hybrid, analyzed the battery-electric models, concluded the monitoring circuit’s write timing was different enough to prevent failure, and closed the investigation that September.[2] Seven months later remote diagnostic data from the field contradicted them, the investigation reopened in April 2026, and by June NHTSA campaign 26V393 covered 11,495 Toyota bZ units, 4,739 Lexus RZs, and 4,757 Subaru Solterras, with Toyota estimating that 100% carry the defect.[3] Beyond propulsion loss, the pre-collision system and vehicle stability control can also go inoperable. Dealers will flash updated firmware for free, and notification letters ship August 3.
What matters beyond the bug itself is that this is the e-TNGA platform’s second cross-brand recall in under two years, following the 94,320-vehicle HVAC defrost recall that hit these same three models in 2025, which brings the running total past 115,000 recalled vehicles from two unrelated defects on one shared architecture.[4] Platform sharing makes EVs cheaper and faster to develop, but it also turns one supplier’s firmware bug into three automakers’ simultaneous crisis.
Denso has been here before: a deformed fuel pump impeller in 2020 triggered a recall covering 3.53 million vehicles across Toyota, Honda, Ford, Subaru, and Mitsubishi, and that litigation is still open.[5] Platform defenders will counter that higher volume per component means more testing hours and faster detection, and they have a point, because Toyota did detect this bug seventeen months before the recall; they just spent eight of those months believing their own analysis over the data that eventually proved them wrong.
Limitations: Zero crashes have been reported, only one warranty claim filed, and the 100% defect rate reflects theoretical exposure rather than observed failures; these 2026-model EVs won’t appear in FARS data for years, so this analysis measures recall scope and supplier concentration risk, not crash outcomes.
What to do: If you drive a 2026 Toyota bZ, Lexus RZ, or Subaru Solterra, check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Toyota recall numbers are 26LA07 and 26TA11; Subaru’s is WRG26. If your dashboard flashes “EV System Malfunction,” pull over. The car has already decided it’s done driving.
