GM Built Three Cars on One Platform. Their Death Rates Span a 9x Gap.

Same crash structure. Same factory. Same decade. Between 2005 and 2011, General Motors sold three compacts on its Delta platform: Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet HHR, Saturn Ion. In FARS data from 2014 to 2023, their death rates look like they came from three separate planets.[1]

Cobalt: 5.10 deaths per 100 million VMT. Fifth deadliest vehicle in our database. HHR: 2.12. Ion: 0.55. Combined body count: 2,241 people across three nameplates.[1]

Blame the ignition switch first. GM’s defective unit killed at least 124 people by shutting off engines at speed and disabling airbags.[2] GM paid $900 million in criminal fines. But 124 of 1,540 Cobalt deaths is 8%. Subtract every switch death and that 5.10 rate barely moves.

So I pulled toxicology. My beat. If the Cobalt attracted wilder drivers, blood alcohol should tell the story. It doesn’t.

Ion drivers showed 22.9% impairment, slightly higher than Cobalt’s 22.4%.[1] Nearly identical. And yet the Ion’s death rate is 9.3 times lower. Alcohol and drugs do not explain this gap. Not even close.

What does? Price. GM sold the Cobalt at $13,000 as its cheapest nameplate. First car for 19-year-olds. Fleet fodder. An SS turbo variant with 260 horsepower for people who wanted to pretend a Cobalt was a sports car. Every one of those demographics correlates with more miles, more speed, more risk.

Chevrolet priced the HHR higher and styled it like a 1940s panel truck. Older buyers. Fewer miles. Saturn’s Ion sat in no-haggle showrooms where the customer base self-selected for sensibility.

FARS doesn’t record who signs the loan. But the death rate is the demographic signal. It encodes age, income, miles, and risk appetite into a single number. On GM’s Delta platform, that number ranges from 0.55 to 5.10.

If you still drive anything on this platform, check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Multiple open recalls remain, including the ignition switch. And remember: the switch only explains 8% of why the Cobalt is deadly. Whatever explains the other 92% is still sitting in your driver’s seat.
