The Crown Vic Hasn't Been Built Since 2011. It Still Kills 88 People a Year.
Ford shut down the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Ontario on September 15, 2011. Its last Crown Victoria rolled off the line that afternoon and into automotive history. Fifteen years later, FARS records 881 deaths in Crown Victorias between 2014 and 2023, averaging 88 fatalities per year in a car that nobody has manufactured since Obama's first term.
The Crown Vic's afterlife is a uniquely American infrastructure story. For two decades, approximately 85% of American police departments ran Crown Victoria Police Interceptors as their primary patrol vehicle. Departments bought them in bulk, drove them through 8-to-12-hour shifts of idling, pursuit driving, and curb strikes, then auctioned them off after three to five years of service for $2,000 to $5,000 apiece. What replaced them on the police lot was a new Explorer or a Charger. What happened to the old ones is where the body count lives.
Those ex-police Crown Vics funneled directly into the used-car market at price points that attracted buyers with no other options. A body-on-frame V8 sedan with leather seats and 130,000 hard miles on it, selling for the price of a decent television, becomes primary transportation for people who can't afford anything safer. Mechanical durability that made it a good police car guaranteed it would stay on the road long enough to kill its second or third owner in a vehicle designed before side-curtain airbags, electronic stability control, or IIHS small-overlap crash testing existed.
FARS model-year data is blunt about when these cars were born: 78 deaths trace to 2008 models, 72 to 2003 models, 65 to 2006 models. Peak-production police interceptor years, now 18 to 23 years old, still generating a body count that exceeds what the Chrysler Pacifica, Toyota Sienna, and Honda Odyssey manage combined with modern vehicles that people are actually still buying.
The impairment data makes the picture worse, not better. Of 936 Crown Victoria drivers in FARS fatal crashes, 22.3% tested positive for alcohol or drugs. That is the second-highest impairment rate among full-size sedans, trailing only the Dodge Charger. That demographic shift from professional drivers operating under departmental alcohol policies to private owners with no institutional oversight is visible right there in the toxicology column. One in five Crown Vic fatalities involves a driver who should not have been behind the wheel of any car, let alone one with a 1.46-per-100-million-VMT death rate and a gas tank that the Center for Auto Safety once compared to the Ford Pinto's.[1]
That comparison was not rhetorical. Between 1983 and 2003, at least 30 police officers burned to death after rear-impact crashes punctured the Crown Vic's fuel tank, which Ford mounted behind the rear axle in what crash investigators called "the crush zone."[2] A Detroit Free Press investigation in 2003 documented at least 69 fire-related fatalities across the Panther platform family, which includes the Crown Vic, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car, vehicles that share the same 1979 chassis architecture.[3] Ford added fuel-tank shields to 2003-and-later models but maintained that pre-2003 vehicles met federal standards. NHTSA investigated, confirmed the Crown Vic survived 30-mph rear impacts without fuel leakage, and closed the probe. Officers kept dying in impacts above 30 mph, because that is a standard measured against a parking-lot tap, not a highway collision.
Combined FARS toll across all three Panther badges is 2,294 deaths. On its own, the Crown Vic has a crash-to-death ratio of 1.53, meaning every 1.5 fatal crashes involving a Crown Victoria produce one occupant death. It does not, generally speaking, kill the people in the other car. It kills the person sitting in it. That is the engineering profile of a vehicle that is large enough to absorb energy but too structurally primitive to redirect it away from the occupant compartment.
NHTSA does not recall vehicles for being old. It recalls them for specific manufacturing defects: a worn stamping die in a Hyundai Kona seat-belt buckle, a mislabeled weight sticker on a Subaru Ascent, a starter motor that overheats in a BMW 3 Series. This week alone, those three recalls covered 907,000 vehicles. The Kona has a FARS death rate of 0.12. The Ascent sits at 0.78. The BMW 3 Series comes in at 2.73, which is genuinely dangerous, and it got a recall. The Crown Victoria's 1.46 rate, spread across a fleet of 525,000 aging vehicles with no airbag upgrades, no stability control retrofits, and no mechanism to pull them off the road, generates more annual fatalities than all three of those recalled vehicles combined, and nobody is sending a letter.
What to do
If you're driving a Crown Victoria built before 2003, the fuel-tank shield recall may never have been applied to your car. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. If you're shopping used cars under $5,000, know that the Crown Vic's FARS death rate of 1.46 is nearly double the Dodge Charger's 0.75 and triple the Chrysler Pacifica's 0.19 in the same price range. Mechanical reliability is not the same thing as crash survivability, and a car that starts every morning can still kill you Tuesday afternoon.
