The Dodge Charger HEMI Is the Only Vehicle in America That Tops Both IIHS Death Rate Lists

Most vehicles in the IIHS death rate study pick a lane. A Kia Rio kills its own driver at 170 per million registered vehicle years, worst in the dataset, but its other-driver rate hovers around 55. A Ram 3500 does the opposite: 204 per million for the person in the other car, near zero for its own occupant. Only the Dodge Charger HEMI 2WD appears in the top five of both lists simultaneously, posting 127 for its own driver and 161 for the other driver.[1]

That combined 288 is not a metric IIHS publishes. They split the world into your-driver-dies and their-driver-dies as separate rankings. But when you add the columns, the Charger HEMI stands alone at the intersection of those two Venn diagrams, the only production sedan in modern history that dominates both.

Understanding why requires ignoring the comfortable explanations. A Ram 3500 kills others because physics demands it: 7,000 pounds of steel moving at highway speed turns conservation of momentum into a sentencing hearing for whatever it hits. That is a mass problem, arguably a necessary one, because the Ram 3500 exists to haul 30,000 pounds and you cannot regulate that function away without pulling working trucks off the road. A Kia Rio dies because the same physics works in reverse. Neither vehicle is surprising. Both do exactly what their curb weight predicts.

At about 4,500 pounds, the Charger HEMI sits in the "large car" class, where the average driver death rate is 104 and the average other-driver rate is 107. It beats both averages by double digits. It is not massive enough to dominate other vehicles through sheer inertia the way a Ram 3500 does. Something else is generating the 161 other-driver figure, and it is not the car's sheet metal.

It is speed. IIHS adjusts for age and sex but explicitly does not adjust for driving speed, annual mileage, or driver behavior. IIHS President David Harkey told Carscoops that muscle cars and sports cars post elevated death rates "largely because of how they're driven."[1] A 4,500-pound sedan hitting a Corolla at 95 mph transfers more kinetic energy than a Ram 3500 doing 60. Energy scales with the square of velocity, so doubling the speed quadruples the lethality. No Ram-class mass is required to kill the other driver when velocity fills the gap.

Cross-referencing IIHS with a decade of NHTSA FARS data confirms the pattern. In 1,536 fatal crashes involving a Dodge Charger between 2014 and 2023, 715 of the dead were Charger occupants. Another 821 were not.[2] That is a 53.5% externality ratio: most of the time a Charger appears in a fatal crash, somebody else's family is getting the call. Layer the toxicology: 22.7% of Charger drivers in those fatal crashes tested positive for alcohol or drugs.[2] Above the fleet average, but 77.3% were sober. Both sides of the crash die, and mostly sober.

Stellantis discontinued the ICE Charger after the 2023 model year. No replacement V8 sedan is coming. IIHS data covers the vehicle's final form: 2023 models tracked through 2024. This is an autopsy, and the cause of death is listed twice.

What to do with this: If you own a Charger HEMI, the IIHS data does not prove your car is structurally deficient. It proves your car is statistically more likely to be involved in a crash that kills someone, including you. Slow down. If you are shopping for a used Charger HEMI, understand that its insurance premiums are not random: they price a combined death rate that no other sedan matches. And if you are in a Corolla watching a Charger HEMI fill your rearview mirror at 90 mph, the math is not in your favor on either side of the impact.
