You're 71× More Likely to Die in One Hyundai Than Another. Every Automaker Has the Same Problem.
A Hyundai Kona kills at 0.12 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. A Hyundai Veloster kills at 8.54. Same corporate headquarters in Seoul. Same dealer network. Same warranty. The Veloster is 71 times deadlier per mile driven.
This isn’t a Hyundai problem. It’s an everyone problem. I ran the FARS cross-tabulation for every manufacturer with three or more models in the database. Ford’s spread is 43× (Mustang at 6.02 vs. Transit at 0.14). Chevrolet’s is 41×. Toyota’s is 33×. Honda’s is 24×. Nissan, 15×. BMW, 12×. Subaru, the brand that markets itself on safety, still has a 12× gap between its Legacy and its Crosstrek.[1]
The smallest spread I found among major manufacturers? Mercedes-Benz, at 4× between the E-Class (0.64) and the M-Class (0.16). Four times is the floor. Nobody does better than 4×.
Think about what that means for the $47 billion the auto industry spends annually on advertising.[2] Every brand-level safety campaign (Toyota Safety Sense, Hyundai SmartSense, Honda Sensing) papers over a reality where model selection matters 10 to 70 times more than brand selection. You can be a “Toyota person” and end up in a Land Cruiser (6.27 per 100M VMT) or a RAV4 (0.19). One choice is 33 times deadlier than the other. Neither requires you to leave the dealership.
There’s a pattern in the data worth flagging: the deadliest models tend to be older, lighter, or sportier. The safest tend to be newer crossovers and three-row SUVs. Part of the spread is fleet age. A 2004 Tracker has been accumulating crash exposure for two decades while a 2022 Kona has had three years on the road. Comparing them isn’t exactly fair. But that’s actually the point. Brand loyalty follows you across generations. A Chevy customer who traded a Tracker for an Equinox (0.36) got a 22× safety improvement without switching brands. A Hyundai customer who went from a Veloster to a Kona got a 71× improvement. The brand didn’t change. The model did everything.
Subaru’s entire range sits between 0.08 and 0.95, a tighter band than most. That matters. But even Subaru’s 12× spread means choosing a Legacy over a Crosstrek costs you a factor of 12 in fatal crash risk. If you’re shopping Subaru because “Subaru is safe,” you’re right on average and potentially very wrong on specifics.
Stop shopping by badge. Start shopping by VIN. Check your model’s fatality rate, its IIHS rating for the specific year you’re buying, and its recall history. A Hyundai Kona is statistically safer than a Toyota Land Cruiser, a BMW 3 Series, or a Nissan Maxima. The brand premium is a marketing artifact. The model-level data is the engineering reality.
