BMW Recalled 29,119 Hybrids for Fire Risk. The Part That Failed Doesn’t Exist in an EV.

The engine starter relay in BMW’s 530e xDrive and 740Le xDrive plug-in hybrids can corrode, overheat, short-circuit, and catch fire.[1] NHTSA posted the recall today. 29,119 vehicles. Dealers will replace the starter free of charge.

BMW 5 Series fatality rate vs. Tesla Model 3

An engine starter relay. A small electromagnetic switch that cranks the combustion engine every time you turn the key. It exists because BMW’s “electrified” plug-in hybrids still carry a full internal combustion powertrain: engine, transmission, exhaust, fuel injection, starter motor. A Tesla Model 3 doesn’t have one. There is no engine to start.

The FARS data makes the engineering gap uncomfortably visible. The BMW 5 Series (which includes the 530e variants now under recall) carries a fatality rate of 1.16 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. The Tesla Model 3 sits at 0.05. The Model Y at 0.03.[2] BMW’s midsize luxury sedan kills at 23 times the rate of its fully electric competitor. The 7 Series, home of the 740Le, runs 0.80. Sixteen times the Model 3.

Caveats exist: FARS lumps all 5 Series variants together, the Tesla fleet is younger, and buyer demographics diverge. But plug-in hybrids were sold as the “best of both worlds” — electric commute range, gasoline road trips. What they deliver is the failure modes of both. Every component that can corrode, leak, or overheat in a gas car remains. Plus a high-voltage battery pack bolted next to it.

The Strongest Counterargument

The 23x rate gap reflects fleet age more than powertrain architecture. BMW 5 Series models in FARS span two decades; Teslas are disproportionately new with modern crash structures. A fair comparison would control for model year, curb weight, and driver demographics. This recall is one defect in one supplier’s batch, not evidence that every PHEV is a fire risk.

Limitations

FARS covers 2014–2023. BMW 5 Series data includes all powertrain variants (gasoline, diesel, PHEV), not 530e alone. Tesla fleet age skews newer. VMT modeling carries ±15% uncertainty for lower-volume segments.

What You Should Do

If you drive a BMW 530e, 740Le, or any iPerformance plug-in hybrid, check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls today. The fix is free. If you’re cross-shopping electrified luxury sedans, full EVs eliminated the starter motor, the alternator, the exhaust, and the transmission. Today BMW recalled one of those eliminated parts for catching fire.
