BMW’s Driveshaft Has Been Recalled Seven Times in Fifteen Years, and the Latest Fix Is Adhesive
A driveshaft connects the engine to the wheels, and BMW has recalled that connection at least seven times since 2011, each recall targeting a different component and failure mode.[1][2][3] Combined: a quarter-million vehicles. On August 18, chapter seven opened with 27,720 units of the 840i, 750e, and 540i recalled for excessive wear at the driveshaft-to-differential connection.[1]
Walk the timeline. In 2011, 3 Series xDrive bolts were not torqued during assembly.[4] By 2016, front universal joint seals on over 210,000 X-series SUVs were letting water destroy the joint from inside, a problem that expanded across three recall rounds as BMW kept finding more vehicles from supplier IFA Rotorion.[2][3] In 2017, a different supplier shipped rear CV joint rivets with insufficient fatigue strength across 9,000 sedans, while M5 and M6 driveshafts turned out to have been inadequately welded.[5][6]
That was already four failure modes by 2017, and the list kept growing. In 2018, 2,660 M3 and M4 cars came back because the driveshaft flange lacked durability, and in 2020, more 3 Series vehicles returned for insufficient fastener torque, reprising 2011.[7][4] Seven recalls spanning bolts, seals, rivets, welds, flanges, torque values, and now the differential surface itself, across different models, years, and suppliers.
All of which brings us to the remedy in NHTSA's August 2026 notice: dealers will inspect the connection and, if necessary, "apply adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear axle differential."[1] These vehicles run $56,000 to $113,000. Structural adhesives are legitimate engineering tools, and that is the strongest defense available; it remains a striking sentence in the remedy for the seventh drivetrain failure of the Ultimate Driving Machine.
Limitations: FARS cannot attribute fatalities to driveshaft defects; it records crash outcomes, not root causes. Some recall counts are not publicly enumerated, making 250,000-plus a conservative floor, and BMW sells roughly 300,000 vehicles per year in the U.S., so the cumulative total is a fraction of production.
What you should do: If you own a 2021-2026 540i, 2022-2026 840i, or 2024-2026 750e, check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls without waiting for the owner notification letters, which are not scheduled until October 2. Grinding, clicking, or vibration from underneath means do not wait for the letter.
