The Fatality Rate Just Broke Below 1.0. Motorcyclists Are Going the Other Direction.

NHTSA announced yesterday that the Q1 2026 fatality rate dropped to 0.99 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, the first time the number has broken below 1.0 in over a decade and the lowest quarterly figure since 2014.[1] Pop the champagne, but park the bike first.

Seven thousand seven hundred seventy people died on American roads in the first three months of this year, a 4.3% drop from the year before, continuing a streak of quarterly declines that started in mid-2022. Full-year 2025 came in at 36,640 fatalities, down 6.7% from 2024.[2] Pedestrians, bicyclists, passenger-vehicle occupants, weekend drivers, people in speeding-related wrecks, people in rollover crashes: all declining when NHTSA last broke out the subcategory data. Every group tracked showed improvement except motorcyclists, who ticked up 1%, and drivers over 65, who matched that grim distinction.[3]

One percent sounds trivial until you pull back to the 27-year arc that FARS data renders in brutal, unambiguous clarity. In 1997, motorcycle fatalities accounted for 5% of all traffic deaths, and passenger-vehicle occupants made up 77%. By 2024, those numbers had shifted to 16% and 58%, respectively. Motorcyclists nearly tripled their annual death count from 2,116 to 6,228 while the vehicles around them got dramatically, measurably, relentlessly safer.[4] Per mile traveled, riding a motorcycle in 2023 was 28 times deadlier than driving a car. More riders on the road partly explains more deaths, sure, but the share shift is too extreme for exposure alone: passenger-vehicle fatalities fell 30% in absolute numbers during the same period that motorcycle fatalities nearly tripled.

The instinct is to blame distracted drivers staring at their phones, and inattentional blindness genuinely does kill riders, and ADAS systems that detect pedestrians and cyclists frequently still miss motorcycles. But the self-inflicted damage is staggering. Thirty-six percent of fatally injured motorcycle riders in 2024 held no valid license, compared with 17% for passenger-vehicle drivers.[4] About a quarter of fatal motorcycle crashes involved alcohol. Roughly a third were single-vehicle wrecks where no distracted cager was anywhere in the frame.

Cars received airbags, electronic stability control, automatic emergency braking, and structural engineering that distributes impact energy across five axes of deformation over 150 carefully choreographed milliseconds. Motorcycles got Bluetooth helmet speakers and slightly grippier tires. The fundamental physics of a 450-pound machine with no crumple zone, no side-impact beam, and no roof structure hasn't changed since the 1970s; the physics of four-wheeled protection transformed completely, and every improvement that makes your Camry marginally safer widens the lethality gap for the rider sharing your lane.

What this means for you: If you ride, the national safety trend does not belong to you. Wear a full-face DOT/ECE-rated helmet regardless of what your state requires. Get properly licensed; the fatality gap between licensed and unlicensed riders should terrify you into spending the $350 on an MSF course today, or retaking one if yours was more than five years ago. And accept the arithmetic: American roads just posted their safest quarter in a decade, a genuine milestone built on decades of engineering, regulation, and behavioral change. None of it was designed to save you.

The Q1 2026 figure (0.99 per 100M VMT) is a preliminary estimate; final figures typically arrive 12–18 months later. The subcategory breakdown (motorcyclists up 1%) comes from the most recent NHTSA subcategory release covering H1 2024, not Q1 2026, which has not yet been disaggregated by road user type.
