The Acura TLX Has a 0.11 Death Rate and a Federal Investigation

The Acura TLX kills 0.11 people per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. In the FARS database of 337 models, that puts it near the absolute floor for lethality. Only 30.3% of TLX crashes in the federal dataset resulted in a fatality, compared to a fleet-wide average north of 55%. The MDX, Acura's three-row SUV, sits at 0.30 per 100M VMT with a 41.7% fatality-per-crash ratio, placing it among the 15 most survivable vehicles in America.[1]

On March 6, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation opened a formal probe into 137,329 model-year 2021–2023 TLX sedans and 2022–2023 MDX SUVs. The allegation: the interfacing splines connecting the transmission to the rear-drive power take-off unit are shearing. When they go, AWD converts to front-wheel-drive instantaneously. No dashboard warning. No grinding lead-up. Just a sudden redistribution of torque that strips rear-axle drive power and degrades directional stability at highway speed.[2]

Forty-eight ODI complaints backed the petition that triggered the investigation. That's a 0.03% complaint rate across the affected population. By recall math, that's noise. By engineering math, it's a spline interface failing under normal operating loads in a vehicle designed around all-wheel-drive dynamics. The car's suspension tuning, weight distribution, and stability programming all assume four driven wheels. Remove two without telling the driver or the stability computer, and you've converted one of America's safest sedans into a mid-corner physics experiment.

What makes this worth tracking isn't the complaint volume. It's the category. Traditional safety defects kill you during a crash: bad airbags, weak roof pillars, fuel leaks. The TLX excels at all of that. Its crash protection numbers are exceptional. But a drivetrain spline failure doesn't care about your five-star rating. It creates the loss-of-control event that puts you into the barrier in the first place. The TLX is simultaneously in the top decile for crash survival and under federal investigation for a mechanical defect that could cause the crash it's built to survive.

NHTSA hasn't reported any crashes or fatalities from the spline failures specifically, and the investigation remains in the petition-evaluation phase under 49 CFR Part 552. If the agency grants the petition, a preliminary evaluation follows. If it escalates from there, Honda faces a mandatory recall across both nameplates. For now, 137,329 owners are driving vehicles that FARS data says are among the safest on the road, connected to a drivetrain that 48 of their peers say disassembled itself without warning.
