Toyota's New C-HR Can Overcharge Itself Down a Mountain. The Bug Was Found in a Car That Doesn't Exist Yet.
Let's talk about what happens in the first 150 milliseconds after a protection system becomes the hazard. Toyota recalled 8,521 of its all-new 2026 C-HR electric crossovers on September 2 because a software bug in the battery's charge limiter lets regenerative braking overcharge the pack. The pack's own protection logic then detects the overcharge and responds by shutting down the entire electric drive system while the car is moving. Warning lights, a buzzer, then nothing from the accelerator.[1][2]
The trigger conditions read like a ski-trip itinerary. Cold temperatures, a battery at or near full charge, and sustained regenerative braking. So: you charge the C-HR to 100% overnight at the lodge, point it down the mountain in the morning, and let regen do the braking the way every EV owner is told to. That is precisely the scenario that can overcharge the pack and kill the car mid-descent. The behavior that maximally rewards regen use is the behavior that triggers the bug. Genius.[3]
And here is the part I can't stop thinking about. Toyota didn't find this bug in a C-HR. It found it in April while testing an undisclosed future BEV model (a car that may not exist yet in any form you can buy), which prompted a review of control-unit software on other EVs that flagged the C-HR. There were no warranty claims, no field reports. The shipped fleet was debugged by a ghost.[3]
This is now a pattern. In June, Toyota recalled 20,991 of its 2026 bZ, Subaru Solterra, and Lexus RZ EVs for a completely different battery-ECU bug: a race condition where two chips write to the same memory address, failing a self-check and shutting down drive power. That bug was discovered during development testing of a new plug-in hybrid. Two campaigns, two unrelated root causes, one identical failure mode, one identical discovery method: a test program for a different vehicle exposing the defect in the one you drive. Your Toyota EV is being quality-checked by cars that aren't on sale.[5]
Credit where due. Both recalls are proactive, both fixes are free, and nobody was hurt. Compared to the buried-defect era, self-reporting a zero-claim software bug found in your own lab is the safety culture working. But step back and look at the shape of it. The defective component in this campaign is the battery protection logic itself — the code whose entire job description is keeping the pack safe. When it fails, the failure mode isn't a damaged battery. It's a dead car on the highway. And Toyota's test program keeps catching these bugs in vehicles other than the ones carrying them, which means the current fleet's firmware validation has a coverage hole shaped exactly like this bug. Twice.[3][5]
What you can actually do. If you own a 2026 C-HR built between February 6 and July 10, 2026, check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls now rather than waiting for the October 18 owner letter. A free dealer visit fixes it.[1] Until it's done, don't charge to 100% before a long downhill run in cold weather — cap the charge lower and use the friction brakes on descents so regen can't push the pack over the edge. If you ever hear the buzzer with an EV system malfunction warning, pull over immediately. Power steering and brakes still work; the accelerator is the thing that went silent.[2]
What this article did not prove. Nobody has been hurt; there are zero warranty claims or field reports, so the real-world frequency of this failure is unknown, not merely unreported. Nobody has named the "future BEV model," so we can't say whether it shares the defective logic or how much of Toyota's EV lineup is exposed. Electrek notes the European C-HR+ is essentially the same vehicle and the recall could extend overseas, but that is unconfirmed.[4] The June bZ race-condition recall and this one are different root causes; the pattern here is the firmware family and the discovery method, not the code path. And to be fair to the numbers people: EVs still carry the lowest fatality rates in our FARS data. This is a software-quality story, not a doom story.[5]
