GM Builds Two Identical Trucks in the Same Missouri Plant. One Kills at Twice the Rate.

On September 3, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety handed the 2026 GMC Canyon a marginal rating in its updated moderate-overlap crash test and a poor for vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention. The morgue had already rendered its verdict: across a decade of federal fatal-crash data, the Canyon's estimated fatality rate is 0.59, more than double the 0.28 posted by the Chevrolet Colorado.[1]

Consider what that means. Both trucks ride on the same GMT platform. Both roll off the same Wentzville, Missouri assembly line.[4] For most of the last decade they shared engines, frames, and crash structures, separated mostly by grille, badge, and sticker price. Same bones, same factory, and yet one kills at twice the rate.

You might blame the drivers, but FARS keeps toxicology on fatal-crash drivers, and the twins' profiles match: 19.0 percent of Colorado drivers in fatal crashes were alcohol- or drug-impaired, versus 20.9 percent for the Canyon.[1] Close enough that impairment explains nothing. That cross-check, twins matched on impairment and diverging on death rate, is the uncomfortable part, because it removes the easiest excuse, which means something else is doing the killing.

Steel is the easy suspect, but the strongest case against blaming the truck is the buyer. GMCs cost more, and pricier trucks attract different owners: wealthier, more rural, more likely to option the lifted AT4X off-road trims and take them somewhere a crash test never goes. Where people drive matters as much as what they drive, and FARS rates are built on VMT estimates, not odometer readings, with roughly 15 percent uncertainty baked in for low-volume models. The Canyon's fleet is less than a third the Colorado's, which means noisier data. It is entirely possible this gap is sociology, not steel.

There is one more check the lab hasn't run. IIHS has not put the Colorado through the updated moderate-overlap test, so the Canyon's marginal rating has no twin to compare against yet.[2] GM spokesman Mark Lubin told the Detroit Free Press on September 2 that "the safety of our vehicles is the highest priority for the entire GM team," and noted the 2026 Canyon's four-star NHTSA rating.[3] And FARS captures only fatal crashes; a truck can look clean in the morgue and ugly in the emergency room. Most of both trucks' deaths come from the 2004–2012 first generation, two nameplates that skipped 2013 and 2014 entirely before returning in 2015.

So what do you do with this? If you are shopping midsize pickups, the federal data says the Colorado's fatality rate is less than half its twin's, and the 2026 Canyon carries an IIHS marginal in the updated moderate-overlap test. If you already own a Canyon, you do not need to panic; you need to check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and drive like the statistics are watching. And if you are GM, you might ask why two trucks from the same line diverge this far. The smirk is in the data, and somebody should wipe it off.

Limitations: FARS captures only fatal crashes, not injuries; a low fatality rate does not guarantee low injury rates. Estimated rates use VMT estimates rather than odometer readings, with roughly ±15% uncertainty for low-volume models like the Canyon (262,500 estimated fleet vs. 918,750 for the Colorado). Most deaths in the dataset come from 2004–2012 first-generation trucks; second-generation data (2015+) is thinner. IIHS has not run the Colorado through the updated moderate-overlap test, so no lab comparison of the twins exists. Driver demographics and driving environments are not captured in FARS and remain unmeasured confounders.
